Everything you actually need to brew your first batch of beer at home — the essential gear, how to choose a fermenter, what to skip, and what it costs to get started.

Brewing beer at home needs far less gear than most starter kits suggest. A fermenter, a pot, a sanitizer, a hydrometer, and something to bottle into will get you a genuinely good first batch — everything else is a convenience you can add once you know you enjoy it.

What you actually need to start

Every batch of beer follows the same path: boil, cool, ferment, package. Each stage needs one or two tools, and the beginner kits sold online simply bundle them together. These are the four groups that matter.

A fermenter + airlock A 6–6.5 gallon food-grade bucket or carboy with a lid, plus an airlock and rubber grommet so CO₂ can escape without letting air in. This is where the yeast does its work for 1–2 weeks.
A brew kettle A stainless pot of at least 3 gallons (5+ is better) to boil your wort. You can start on the stovetop; a bigger kettle lets you do full-volume boils later.
Sanitizer A no-rinse sanitizer such as Star San. After the boil, anything that touches your beer must be sanitized — this is the single most important item on the list.
Measuring + packaging A hydrometer and test jar, a thermometer, an auto-siphon and tubing for transferring, and bottles + caps + a capper (or a keg) to finish.

Choosing a fermenter: bucket, carboy or conical

The fermenter is where you’ll make your biggest first decision. All three common types make the same beer — they differ in price, weight, and how easy they are to live with.

Plastic bucket — cheapest, lightest, and easiest to clean thanks to the wide opening. Best starting choice. Scratches over time, so replace every year or two.

PET plastic carboy (Better Bottle) — lets you see fermentation, shatterproof, and lighter than glass. A great middle ground. Narrow neck is slightly harder to clean.

Glass carboy — scratch-resistant and clear, so it lasts for years. But heavy, slippery when wet, and genuinely dangerous if dropped — many brewers have stitches to prove it.

Stainless conical — the long-term dream: durable, easy to dump yeast, temperature-friendly. Overkill and expensive for a first batch — an upgrade, not a starting point.

Whatever you choose, size it for headspace: a 5-gallon batch wants a 6–6.5 gallon vessel so the foaming krausen has room and doesn’t blow out the airlock.

Sanitation: the one thing you can't skip

Ninety percent of homebrew problems trace back to poor sanitation. Wild yeast and bacteria are everywhere, and after the boil your beer has no defenses. Cleaning removes visible dirt; sanitizing kills what you can’t see — you need both, in that order.

Star San is the standard: a no-rinse acid sanitizer that works in 1–2 minutes of contact. Mix about 1 oz per 5 gallons of water, and don’t fear the foam — the bubbles are harmless and can be left in the fermenter. Keep a spray bottle of it mixed and ready on brew day.

Measuring tools: hydrometer, thermometer, scale

These are what turn brewing from guesswork into a repeatable process. They’re cheap and they pay for themselves on the first batch.

Hydrometer + test jar Measures sugar density. Read it before pitching (original gravity) and at the end (final gravity) to know your ABV and whether fermentation is done. About $10–15.
Thermometer Yeast is fussy about temperature. You need to cool wort to ~68°F before pitching and hold fermentation in the yeast's range. A digital probe or stick-on strip both work.
A kitchen scale For weighing hops and priming sugar accurately. A basic gram scale is enough and doubles for every other ferment you make.

Bottling vs kegging gear

Packaging is the last stretch, and it’s where beginners and veterans diverge. Both make the same beer; the difference is time and up-front cost.

Bottling needs a bottling bucket with a spigot, a bottling wand, a capper, caps, and clean pry-off bottles you can reuse. It’s cheap to start and needs no special maintenance. The downside is the two-hour ritual of sanitizing, filling, and capping 50 bottles per batch.

Kegging moves your beer into a 5-gallon Cornelius keg, force-carbonated from a CO₂ cylinder and regulator. It costs more to set up but turns bottling day into a ten-minute transfer. Most brewers start with bottles and switch once they’re brewing often enough to resent the cleanup.

What it costs to get started

You don’t need to spend much. A complete beginner setup that brews real, good beer lands around $100–150 including your first ingredients — and second-hand gear can cut that in half.

Extract kits are the easiest and cheapest entry point — you steep grains and add malt extract instead of mashing, which skips a lot of equipment. Once you’ve brewed a few, all-grain brewing and kegging are the natural next investments.

Worthwhile upgrades after your first batches

Once you know you’re sticking with it, a few additions make a real difference to quality and consistency — in rough order of value.

Temperature control A cheap fermentation chamber (a used fridge + a temperature controller) is the biggest quality jump you can buy. Stable fermentation temperature cleans up off-flavors more than any ingredient upgrade.
A wort chiller An immersion or plate chiller cools your boil to pitching temperature in minutes instead of an ice-bath hour, reducing contamination risk.
A larger kettle & burner A 7.5–10 gallon kettle and an outdoor propane burner let you do full-volume boils and move to all-grain brewing.
